Local Connection:
Kagoshima prefecture produces the most swine annually for consumption in Japan.
It is famous for its local breed of black pig called Kagoshima Berkshire,
which dates back to the Edo period. Thought to have originally been brought from the Ryukyu
Kingdom (Okinawa), their trademark black is punctuated by white markings on their feet, nose,
and tail.
