Local Connection:
Nikko is a Buddhist shrine
complex dating back to the 17th century and home to Tokugawa Ieyasu's mausoleum, Nikko
Toshogu. Nikko Toshogu is famous, not only as the resting
place of one of the shogun responsible for uniting Japan, but also for its carving of The
Three Wise Monkeys. The monkeys illustrate the Japanese proverb "see no evil, hear no evil, speak
no evil" - as it is known in the western world.
